At the end of June the Kitzalpbike MTB Festival took place in Kirchberg in Tyrol, for the 23rd time this year. At 9 a.m. the long distances started together, more than 1,000 participants waited for long and steep climbs, fast downhills and demanding single trails.

Chase team rider Manfred started at the Austrian National Championship on the longest distance with 90 kilometres and over 4,000 metres of altitude difference. On the first mountain he found a good rhythm and was well in the race. But already at the second long ascent up to Ehrenbachhöhe it didn’t run quite as smoothly, the legs didn’t turn really loose anymore. Already then Manfred suspected that today would be a “long” day. The route did not become any easier afterwards, it went on over the Mausefalle to the Hahnenkamm and to the Pengelstein, before after a longer descent the last ascent waited for the riders – again it went up to the Ehrenbachhöhe at 1,800 meters sea level.

At the end, after more than 4,000 meters of altitude difference, the more than 20 minutes long and demanding downhill run over the Fleckalmtrail waited for the riders. Manfred reached the finish after almost 5 ½ hours of driving time. He was exhausted and tired and at the same time disappointed about his performance – unfortunately things did not go well for him on that day. His goal was a time under 5 hours, which would definitely have been possible on a “normal” day.

The fourth race of the 2018 German Cycling League took place as part of the St. Pölten Cycling Marathon. The start and finish was directly in front of the state government building, but in between were 165 sweaty and demanding race kilometres for the drivers.

The race of the elite offered an extremely exciting competition in sultry weather in Ötscherland and the Mariazell area. The course was packed with many meters of altitude and demanding descents and demanded everything from the drivers. At the front Riccardo Zoidl of Felbermayr Wels won the race, behind him Chase team rider Manfred crossed the finish line with the main field after a driving time of 4 h and 30 min. The Chase Up wheels again did a great job and passed the endurance test both uphill and downhill with flying colours.

Chase Technical Manager Felix was also at the start in St. Pölten – he started a few minutes after the elite riders in the much larger field of amateurs. However, it was the same demanding and challenging course for the participants as for the elite riders. Felix found himself after the first mountain of the second group. The many animating attempts to keep up the pace to avoid a grouping of the rear drivers cost grains. On the penultimate climb he had to let his competitors go, and in the second half of the race he had cramps. Nevertheless, he finished the race in the front half of the field.

The electrity plant Donaustadt in Vienna is usually only known as orientation point on the way to Lobau if cycling on the danube island in Vienna. On Sunday, for the first time it was the location and beautiful scenery for a cyclo-cross race. About 100 starters did prefer cycling and competed in three different races instead of celebrating the last Sunday before christmas quiet at home. In the main competition lasting 60 minutes, there were even two Chase athletes participating.

The track was mostly flat but due to a lot of holes demanding for body and material. In combination with the partially heavy wind, it was a very strategic race. After the first half, you could watch the first really severe attacks. It ended very positively for Felix and with a third row for Manfred, only some seconds after him.

Having the Austrian cross-country championship in mind that will take place in January in St.Pölten, both athletes can be really proud of their performance so far and there is still time to work on the last fine tunings concerning their skills.

The highlight of the cyclo-cross season and the final cross competition was the Austrian championship on January, 7th. The track next to the Traisen river in St.Pölten was quite muddy and due to many narrow curves it turned out being very demanding.

Manfred started with some doubts about his physical condition, he had a bad cold during Christmas holidays and therefore had to pause for nine days. In the beginning he was surprised, but he had a good start into this race. After the first round he was in group fighting for position 5. He managed to hold this position for more than the half of the race, there were a lot of tough battles.

Closer to the finish line, the last three rounds Manfred lost his luck. He suffered all in all three punctured wheels, in the exact same place each time.

Thanks to the great and fast work by the Chase support team he succeeded in finishing the competition. Although the very last race was not what Manfred had hoped for, he can look back to a successful cyclo-cross season. In 10 competition participations, he reached the winner’s rostrum for 6 times and even won 3 races supported by Chase-mud rims!

Manfred started his Cross-season 2017 yesterday. He chose an event in Traun in Upper Austria for his kick-off.

“Until the end of the second round I managed to catch up from the rear position that I had to start from. I now reached the leading group. From then, I could overtake the leading position every now and then. Due to some speed attacks the group got smaller. In the second half of the race there was a strong offensive by Philipp Heigl. I needed a whole round to catch up again. After that we were two at the leading position, but Andreas Hofer was only a few meters behind us. In this formation we started into the two last rounds. Most of the time I was cycling in the front position and was trying to keep the distance between me and my opponent. But he was cycling right behind me like a shadow. Finally, in the last bend, 300 meters to the finish line, the most important seconds followed. Philipp Heigl started to speed up amazingly and I couldn’t follow him – this gap remained and I wasn’t able to catch up anymore. Obviously, there was a narrow distance and missing the victory so shortly is teasing. My opponent was better today – huge respect to his performance – and the second position is also a good result.”

Of course it’s a pity to miss the victory shortly, but gratulation though to the excellent performance of Manfred.

Our Chase athlete Manfred Zöger took part in this 3-days-event at the croatian cost region close to Porec and used this opportunity for the finish of his MTB-season like many other mountain bikers.

At The first day, on Friday, a short but fast stage waited for the bikers. Due to the short distance of only 28 kilometers and the very flat track, it was a pulsating competition. The excitement among the cyclists could be felt and there were multiple offensives on the track. Finally, the bikers cycled an average velocity of 30 km per hour and the critical meters were in the final sprint. Manfred was part of the leading group and reached the sixth position. For the overall result, the next two days could still change everything.

The second day a 45 kilometers long course followed. Manfred was lucky that some cyclists in the leading group loosed their track. He finally finished as third biker. That helped him to be lifted up onto the second position after day two in the overall standings.

The marathon on the third day was a very exciting race. Manfred tried very hard and managed to stay with the leading group und headed onto the winner’s podium. The wheather conditions were not as good as on the first two days, it soon started to rain and after a while a powerful thunderbolt started.  That was not enough: Manfred was not lucky on that day. After a stony downhill he lost pressure in his rear wheel and had to stop to repair this harm. Thus, he finally arrived the daily finish after the first six cyclists and was thrown back onto the forth position in the overall standings.

All in all, it was a successful season closing of the MTB season. The turbulent race course showed once again that good and bad luck are very close to each other.

About 250 cyclists from nine different nations faced the challenge in the Bike Night Flachau. Due to a lot of rain and bad wheather conditions prior to the 7th edition of this event on 12th of August, a slippery track could be expected. To attain a fair and above all a secure competition the jury decided to shorten the course. The very heart of the track, the downhill through the Hermann-Maier-Weltcup-course, was only cycled in the first round. As a consequence, the race was even a closer competition between the first three bikers.

Felix Ritzinger wins the spectacle under floodlights in the ski resort Flachau! Partly, with times below 7 minutes per round and 300 starters on the track, dodging the other cyclists that he had overtaken and avoid collisions was the bigger challenge than the slippery and wet meadow. The leading position changed in nearly every round, but in the end after all 18 rounds Felix succeeded in the final sprint in the night and won with 2 hours and 8 minutes – after the disappointing results in previous competitions this was a very important victory for him!
